An inflatable ski liner prototype

Skiing can be an intimidating sport for beginners, especially when equipment doesn't fit properly. Rental boots often cause pressure points or loose fits that affect both comfort and control. Our mission was to create a solution that adapts to each skier's foot, offering a secure, custom fit without specialized equipment or costly customization.

The Concept

The Inflatable Ski Boot Liner integrates air pockets within a standard ski boot liner to provide a customizable fit for all users. An inner structure of inflatable channels and a compact hand pump allow quick inflation or release. Once inflated, the liner holds its form for a full day on the slopes and easily deflates for removal.

The Prototype

The prototype was fabricated using thermoplastic molding, foam integration, and sewn textile channels. The hand pump connects through a lightweight tubing system with a one-way valve to maintain internal pressure. This physical prototype validated the concept's practicality and demonstrated its potential for manufacturing using existing boot liner processes.

Closing

This project demonstrates how thoughtful, user-centered design can enhance comfort and accessibility in sports equipment. The Inflatable Ski Liner brings a custom-fit boot experience to beginners and rental users by combining adaptability with simplicity. It delivers a secure yet flexible hold that adjusts naturally to different boot shapes, offering on-the-fly comfort that encourages confidence on the slopes. By merging accessible materials with a straightforward mechanism, the concept reimagines how design can make skiing more inclusive, comfortable, and enjoyable for all experience levels.
